That is an example of a simple word problem. But we already know the answer without thinking of the word 'algebra'. This is how our mind comes up with the answer.

We start by assuming x is the price per apple. 3x is the price for 3 apples. Now we already know that 3 apples cost 9$. So 3x = 9, now divide both sides by 3. x=3$ per apple.
