In Illustrator, make sure your Layers window is open. If it's not, click on the top menu Window > Layers.
In your canvas, select the object you want to know which layer it's on. Once selected, look at your Layers window, notice on the far right will have a blue square next to a circle. If that circle is a single circle, it means the selected object is located in the sublayers.
Click on the right pointing triangle to open the sublayers. The triangle will point down now. Look for that blue square again. Once you see the blue square right of a double circle, then that's the layer you're looking for. If still a single circle, repeat opening sublayers.

unlock all layers....place the direct selection tool on the object and click (bingo). before you make changes on that layer I suggest you lock all of the other layers (it is a safety habit).

Click on your object on the artbord, then at the bottom of layers panel click on magnifying glass icon ('Locate object'). That's it. I also can't help pointing out how dumb the other commenters are. Did they even read the question?02/03/22
