How to fill half of a word with one colour and the other half with a different colour in Adobe Illustrator?

I want to recreate the text of a logo I have. It had black half way down the text and then yellow for the other half. How do I create text with a different colour on each half in Adobe Illustrator?

Convert your type to outlines and then you can cut the shapes horizontally and make them any colors you wish.

Try this first:

Look at your type in Wireframe mode (CTRL + Y toggles)

Then convert your type to shapes:

Menu >Type > Create Outlines

Ctr l+ Shift + O

Notice how different the type looks now that it is a shape with editable vertices and lines. You can now work with these shapes just as you would with any other.
