Art

Adobe Illustrator,

Adobe Illustrator

I have been using Adobe Illustrator since 1993 and have been teaching vector illustration since 2006. With experience in a wide range of applications for vector art I am ready to tackle any project from Print and web to animation, large format and 3D printing, cartography, illustration and more.
Adobe Photoshop,

Adobe Photoshop

I have been using Adobe Photoshop since 1993 and have worked in various industries doing large format print production, photo colorization, color correction and touch-up. I have been teaching Photoshop for 7 years and I have lessons for any application from Web Design and print setup to using pixels for fun artistic projects like Digital Scrapbooking, Digital Painting and Illustration.
Drawing,

Drawing

I have been teaching life drawing and rendering since 2004. I use the Loomis Method to help students bring their drawing skills to the next level. Many students know how to draw faces in one way. I use this popular drawing method to show how to draw the head from different angles, how to draw features of the face, likes eyes, nose and mouth; and how to draw the muscles and bones that make up difficult things to sketch like hands and posture. This enables students to expand their knowledge of life drawing and also how to imitate cartoon styles, create their own styles and different creatures. I also include drawing in perspectives, shading, and different rendering techniques like pencil, ink, watercolor, etc.
Graphic Design,

Graphic Design

I am a CG Generalist with a 30 year career in graphic design that has run the gamut of everything from CAD and 3D printing to industrial manufacturing, 3D modeling and product simulation to web and video game design, from large architectural installations to printing business cards. With this experience and insight I provide lessons in Design Fundamentals, Color Theory, Typography, Drafting and Rendering. These are an essential part to my curriculum that I have been teaching since 2009 because they focus on the foundation that enhances a students' artistic skills as well as underlying concepts to develop any kind of graphic design application across industries.
Painting,

Painting

I have been painting in several media since 1990 and my favorite is Water Color, but I also enjoy Acrylic, Oil and Pastels. There's also digital painting that can be done using PhotoShop and 3D software like Blender to paint models. I have been teaching a water color painting class for the past 7 years which also incorporates some sketching, pen and ink, perspective rendering, calligraphy and various fun painting techniques. I have fun, simple lessons that anyone can learn and apply to their own projects. I am open to providing similar lessons for any other medium you may be interested in painting with from traditional brush and paints to working with digital tools.
Video Production

Video Production

I have 12 years experience filming multi-camera and audio productions for live music videos, live game shows, and doing video editing and compositing for commercials, animations, cartoons, 3D simulations, interactive learning, instruction videos and presentations. My curriculum involves teaching students to use Adobe Premiere and Blender for their animation and cartoon projects and I have been doing this for 7 years. The lessons include framing a shot, lighting, green screen, camera effects, syncing audio, editing and transitions.

Computer

Adobe Flash,

Adobe Flash

I have been using Flash/Animate since 1994 and have been teaching 2D animation and game design since 2006. I have taught Flash/Animate online with single students and also in collaborative groups to complete a full animation project. My animation studio is a maker space open to the public and has facilitated many animation and game design projects over the past decade and more.

Animation,

Animation

I opened my animation studio as a maker space to host Animation Summer Camps in 2006. Since then I have designed curricula for schools and libraries that use Animation as an outlet to learn STEM related subjects blended with the Arts. Animation has something for everyone and includes all the Arts; like storytelling, acting, writing, music, drawing, illustration and 3D modeling. When possible I like to incorporate hands-on learning using LEGO and clay to create stop motion animation. Then we translate those skills onto the computer to work with digital tools that help bring animation to life.
Dreamweaver,

Dreamweaver

I have been hand-coding web projects for more than 15 years but I still use DreamWeaver because it makes things so much easier and efficient. This is my go to tool when working on sites and when teaching others to code for the web too. I have designed and built hundreds of websites and even teach many of my clients to use WordPress and learn some HTML so that they can manage their own website. I teach Web Design as part of a business entrepreneurship program to help people get started with managing their own website. With ability to work using CSS, JavaScript and PHP Dreamweaver is useful for every part of a web project. It also conveniently has the ability to connect directly to a server making page updates fast and streamlined.

I have designed and built hundreds of websites and even teach many of my clients to use WordPress and learn some HTML so that they can manage their own website. I have been hand-coding HTML since 1998 and teach Web Design as part of a business entrepreneurship program to help people get started with managing their own website. For more advanced applications I use CSS, JavaScript, PHP and MySQL. Designing for mobile devices and the web has added many new skills to the needs of web designers and I strive to stay on top of the latest and greatest technologies. Today, Web Design encompasses a wide range of media and skills. Animation, Apps and Games have become part of our web experience so everything that I teach has to do with Web Design in some way.
Music Production,

Music Production

My music production background dates back to the 1980's with synthesizers and reel-to-reel recording equipment. Since then I have worked behind the scenes doing live audio for stage sound and monitoring, live and studio multi-track recording, multi-track editing and mastering as well as producing music CDs, live internet radio and scores for animation, film and even audio books for children. For the past 8 years I have been teaching music production using MIDI and synthesizers that easily allows you to make music on your computer using a keyboard, or even record your musical instruments with microphones and track them to make a whole song. I am familiar with a variety of DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) like Garage Band, Ableton Live, Fruity Loops, VCV Rack, Audacity and many others.

Amazing First lesson.

Very knowledgeable, patient and great teacher! Can’t wait until my next lesson. I learned more in an hour than I learned in a year alone.

Learned A Lot!

Jay does a great job of explaining how to do things. He was patient and didn't rush me. He showed me a better way to do what I was trying to model. I got farther in one lesson with him than I had the last month on my own. Looking forward to my next lesson!

Awsome!

He was a good balance of helping me finish efficiently and fast while also going slow enough that I understand everything. I had a lot of fun and learned a lot too.

Great 1st session.

Jay knows his stuff; no doubt. He is exactly what was required for my progression. Future sessions are definitely in order. Thanks Wyzant this platform is wonderful.

Knowledgeable and patient tutoring

Jay is very knowledgeable about Blender. He was patient with me as I would bring to the tutoring session a blend file that I had been working on during the week. A blend file full of my mistakes. Jay would patiently and smartly guide me through the troubleshooting. Along the way suggesting corrections and also providing alternative workflows. I am recently retired and exploring a new career in Digital Arts. Working with Jay at the beginning of this process was very helpful as he added hands-on insights not necessarily found in the YouTube videos, Udemy courses, CGCookie courses, and the Blender documentation. Thanks Jay! Jay's Post-Lesson Notes: Lesson #5: Today you experimented with ways to animate text using some classic animation principles like squash and stretch, exaggeration and anticipation. Keeping it simple without an armature will definitely help save time. #4: Today you downloaded a T-pose and a walk cycle (in place) and combined the two actions together using Blender's NLA editor. By having the T-pose translate from point A to point B and blended with the repeating walk cycle you can control how far the character walks. #3: Today you set up a grease pencil animation and rendered a png image sequence which you then added as a movie clip to the VSE and were able to overlay the cat image above the text channel. #2: Today you added an armature to your character and generated a rig. Using the rig you learned a little about IK/FK for posing characters and then appended the character to your scene and posed the character to sit on the sofa. #1: Today you added your image sequence to a plane and aligned the camera to the plane. You added the bee mesh with the armature and set up the UV image. Then you created a curve spiral using the screw modifier and appended the image of the note to attach to the curve.
