First let x equal the unknown variable. Next it says 12 less than x, so write x-12 and set that equal to 51. The equation is : x-12= 51. To solve: The opposite of subtracting is adding, so 12 is added to both sides. This will mean on the left side -12+12 =0 so that the left is just x alone. On the right, it becomes 51+12 = 63.
