Background:
A ratio is used to show the relative size of different numbers and are usually expressed in simplified form, meaning using the smallest whole numbers possible. So if we had 2 red marbles and 6 white marbles, instead of saying that we have a 2:6 ratio of red marbles to white, (i.e. that for every 2 red marbles there are 6 white), we can divide both numbers by their greatest common factor (which is 2):
(2/2):(6/2) = 1:3
thus the (simplified) ratio of red to white marbles is 1:3 (i.e. for every 1 red marble we have there are 3 white ones).
Problem:
Since we have 14mL of apple juice and 56mL of coconut milk for every 28 mL of orange juice, the ratio of apple juice to coconut milk to orange juice is
14 : 56 : 28. We want to simplify this by dividing by the greatest common factor of all three numbers, which is 14
(14/14):(56/14):(28/14)=1:4:2
So our simplified ratio is of apple juice to coconut milk to orange juice is 1:4:2.
(If you didn't see that the GCF was 14, ex. maybe you only saw they were divisible by 2, you would get 7:28:14, which is divisible by 7, which would give you the correct answer, so just keep dividing by common factors until there isn't one.)
