the basic equation of a line is y = mx + b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept
replace m in the equation with 2 since that is the slope given
so, we have y = 2x + b
since (1,-4) is contained on the line, we can substitute this for x and y in the equation and solve for b
y = 2x + b
-4 = 2(1) + b
-4 = 2 + b
-6 = b
plug b into the equation
y = 2x + b
y = 2x - 6
