The volume of the cube is given by the following formula:
V = s3
where s is the length of the side.
Since s = 4, then the volume is
V = 43
V = 64 units3
The volume of the small cube can be found the same way:
V = 13
V = 1 units3
The question doesn't tell me how many small cubes he has to begin with. However, to figure out the question, you would multiply the number of small cubes by their volume of 1 units3. Once this number is found you subtract is from the volume of the big cube: 64 units3.
