x + y = 64
Equation 2, difference between the two numbers:
x = y - 16
Substitute for x in equation 1:
(y - 16) + y = 64
2y -16 = 64
2y = 80
y = 40
Solve for x:
x = y - 16
x = 40 - 16
x = 24
The two numbers are 24 and 40.
