The state-building or imperialism of European powers led to global wars, which led to globalization. Imperialism lasted into the 20th century and was dealt a severe blow by World War I. This produced the League of Nations, which was an attempt to prevent another world war, but it lacked American power, though it was President Wilson's idea, thus it failed. By the end of World War II, imperialism finally ended. The United Nations was formed after WW2, as well as NATO shortly after that. Europe also began making efforts that would eventually form the European Union.
