please clarify---for the expression on the left, do you mean that we should find the absolute value of (4z + 8), and then divide that by 3? What are the dots before and after the absolute value symbols?

No the abs value function is isolated first by dividing both sides of the equation by 3 . The dot is a multiplication symbol

4z/8-8-(3)=0 We add all the numbers together, and all the variables 4z/8-11=0 We multiply all the terms by the denominator 4z-11*8=0 We add all the numbers together, and all the variables 4z-88=0 We move all terms containing z to the left, all other terms to the right 4z=88 z=88/4 z=22
