Hi Amber,
You are asked the find the intersection of 2 linear equations.
There are at least 3 different ways to solve the problem:
1) Substitution
2) Elimination or
3) Graphing.
For substitution and graphing, rearrange both equations to Slope-Intercept form.
5x + 4y = -1 becomes Y = -5/4 x - 1/4
-7x - 2y = -13 becomes Y = -7/2 x + 13/2
For substitution set Y=Y or -5/4 x - 1/4 = -7/2 x + 13/2
solve for X then solve for Y by inserting the value of X into either equation.
Or graph each linear equation and find where the 2 lines intersect.
Does that help?
Bob
X = 3 and Y = -4
