What is the difference between a predator and a parasite?

A human encountering a tiger or a malaria plasmodium is likely to suffer, and the tiger/plasmodium is likely to gain from the transaction. Not necessarily a good example, and I am aware that a successful parasite avoids prematurely killing its host, but I can't see any fundamental difference. Of course it's like pornography: "we know it when we see it". But is there a formal, generally-accepted distinction?
