Just to add a bit more detail to Matt's answer. The mineral part (ground up rock) of soil is made up of varying amounts of sand, silt, and clay. The percentages of these factions is what determines soil texture. Sand particles have the largest diameter and clay the smallest. These particles form from chemical and physical weathering of rock.

There are four main components of soil. The first is finely ground up rock, the second is humus. Humus is decayed organic matter that is very high in nutrients. The third is water, and the fourth is air. You will find all of this in a soil profile.
