Here we have a system of equations where we need two separate values: x, y. Sum means addition, and difference means subtraction.
- x + y = 17
- x - y = 5
We can use elimination, which requires adding the two equations together to cancel "opposites"
-y and y are opposites so they "cancel out"
x + x = 17 + 5 --> 2x=22
Divide by 2 on both sides
x = 11
To find the value of y, substitute the value of x into either equation from the beginning of the problem
x + y = 17
11 + y = 17
-11 -11
y= 6
Check: x + y = 17 --> 11 + 6 = 17
x-y= 5 --> 11-6 = 5
