Question

A couple wishes to rent a car for one day while on vacation. Franks Rental wants $21 per day and $0.20 per mile and any part thereafter, while Coups wants $16 per day and $0.22 per mile and any part thereafter. After how many miles would the price to rent from Coups exceed the price to rent from Franks?

Answer 1

Let x = number of miles driven

 

Cost of renting from Frank's = 21 + 0.20x

Cost of renting from Coups  = 16 + 0.22x

 

16 + 0.22x > 21 + 0.20x

       0.02x > 5

             x > 250

If they drive more than 250 miles, then Coups is more expensive.
