After a night of cards, a poker player finished with some red chips (worth $5 each) and some blue chips (worth $10 each). He received $190 when he cashed in the 23 chips. How many of each colored chip did he finish with?

Total number of chips = 23

x = red chips

y = blue chips

x + y = 23 (total amount of chips received)

Total amount he received = 190

5x + 10y = 190

divide 5 to isolate x

x + 2y = 38

x + y = 23

subtract equation

= 0x +y = 15

y = 15 (blue chips)

substitute y in the quation

x + 15 = 23

subtract 15

x = 23 - 15

x = 8 (red chips)
