the slope is m = (4-2)/(-2 - 6) = 2/-8 = -1/4
y = mx + b is the equation of the line.
b = y - mx
= 2- (-1/4)(6) <---- y=2 when x=6 per the SECOND POINT that is GIVEN.
= 2 + 6/4
= 2 + 3/2
=(4+3)/2
= 7/2
the equation of the line is y = (-1/4)x + 7/2
Note that , using the FIRST GIVEN POINT, y=4 when x=-2,
and per the line equation just found,
y = (-1/4)(-2) + 7/2 = 1/2 + 7/2 = 8/2 = 4 when x=-2, so (-2,4) is on the line
as given, which PROVES the answer is correct.
y = (-1/4)x + 7/2 is the equation of the line that eats the points (-2,4) and (6,2)
done deal....
