The graph of y=x²  will be translated 3 units right and 2 units down. Write the equation for the new graph in standard form.

Remember that our vertex is (h,k) and our equation is y = (x-h) + k

 

Our new vertex is going to be (3, -2), right?  So, our equation is y = (x-3) - 2. This is not standard form, though.

 

First, we get rid of the parentheses.  y = x - 3 - 2, so y = x - 5

 

We need to move the x to the other side to be in standard form, Ax + By = C, so we subtract x from both sides and get -x + y = -5.

 

We can also multiply each side by -1 and make it x - y = 5.  Either would be correct.
