For a photography major, what are ways to take a better picture?

Photography is about taking photographs. You will learn the technique while taking pictures. To be a better a photographer the only way is to take pictures, a lot, and to never stop. Be familiar with controls on your camera (mechanical). Learn about light, aperture, shutter speed, histograms, composition look at photographs you like and decide what it is about that photo you like and PRACTICE.

Learn how to use aperture to control light. Learn composition, editing and photoshop skills. Always consider what direction the light is coming in. Have a tripod ready for any shots with movement.
