Hi Jake,
This question comes down being able to put it into an equation format. Let's call the number X. The quotient of it and -7 would be represented by X/-7 because quotient means division, while the decrease by 2 would be represented by subtracting 2 from that quotient. We are also told that the resulting equation is equal to 10. Thus, the final equation becomes:
X/-7 - 2 = 10
X/-7 = 12 (added 2 to both sides)
X = -84 (multiplied by -7 on both sides)
