I need help with algebraic math

Question

y+8 /5 =y+6 /7 this equation is baffling me. I keep coming up with y=0 or 28/15 or 1.9 or 0.5 I am having so much trouble with my math. I am back in college and this is going to be on an exam soon. please help

(y+8)/5=(y+6)/7

cross multiply

7(y+8)=5(y+6)

7y+56=5y+30

7y-5y=30-56

2y=-26

y=-13

check: (-13+8)/5=(-13+6)/7, -5/5=-7/7, -1=-1
