is a french diploma equal to two years of college in america?

Successful completion of the French Bac more than prepares you for the workload of a US college. Unfortunately, I am not aware of any institution that considers this diploma equivalent to two years of their undergraduate curriculum. If you have high score or mentions, you may be able skip listed prerequisite courses. However, this would have to be on an individual basis, likely with the professor teaching the course you are trying to get into. But, this happens all the time and is completely feasible, so it's worth a try!!

While the level needed to receive a French HS diploma (Baccalauréat) might be considered just as challenging as your first 2 years of college, they are not automatically transferred as such.

My experience was this and I have seen several European students adapt likewise, meaning dealing with the academic transition with few minor adjustments. I came well-prepared to a top-tier college in the US northwest and the few students I have seen and have taught over the years who experienced the same, found the format different but as mentioned above were well prepared for the volume and difficulty of content.
