Jennifer is a caterer. She has her mother's recipe for baking a cake. The recipe calls for 1/3 cup of sugar and 1/2 a cup of butter. She wants to make more servings of the cake for a catering event. She must feed 3 times more people than the serving size of the recipe. What can she do to determine how much sugar and butter to put in the cake?

Essentially you need to make 3 cakes for the catering event which means you need to have each recommended amount of each ingredient 3 times.

If one serving size calls for 1/3 cup of sugar and you need 3 serving sizes, you should multiply 1/3 cup by 3.

1/3cup x 3 = 1 cup of sugar

If one serving size calls for 1/2 cup of butter and you need 3 serving sizes, you should multiply 1/2 cup by 3.

1/2 cup x 3 = 1.5 cups of butter.
