Regarding digital photos and video, I highly recommend a yearly subscription to Carbonite.com. It is a remote backup service that backs up everything on your computer 24/7 in the background. Every change, deletion, or addition you make to any of your files are backed up on their remote servers. The home version is $60/year and has saved me quite a few times from lost or corrupted files. It even saved my entire Lightroom catalog file!!! I can't recommend this enough!
