Chris’s answer is great- just thought I’d throw in an interesting article about learning language from watching TV. There was a time when a particular Argentinian telenovela was extremely popular with Israeli teenagers. They watched it obsessively, never missed an episode, talked about it at school... and all quickly became fluent in Spanish with barely any effort. Apparently watching obsessively is key, and subtitles in your own language help (it’s like an instant dictionary).

That's an excellent question. In general, to reach native speaker-like fluency in a second language, you need to immerse yourself in it. For your use of a second language to become automatic, you should constantly encounter it through reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Instead of reading news in your native language, try reading it in English. Watch English-language TV without subtitles, even if you don't understand everything. Listen to English radio programs or podcasts while cleaning, commuting to work, or doing other activities. The key is to surround yourself in English so you don't have to think consciously about it.
