(2,7) and (3,8) are √2 units from each other. Think about drawing a right triangle between the two points:
The distance between 2 & 3 is 1, as is the distance from 7 to 8. You would have a right triangle with both legs =1. To find the hypotenuse, use the Pythagorean Theorem: a2+b2=c2. Plugging in the legs, 12+12=c2, or 1+1=c2. So 2=c2, and taking the square root of both sides of that equation gives c=√(2), or about 1.414.
