Why are row, column, and null spaces important? My professor showed us how to compute them but didn't know what they actually mean when asked.

If you are doing Gaussian elimination with matrices, then the rows represent the equations and the columns represent the variables.

null spaces occur when there more variables than equations.

The number of null spaces , also known as FREE variables, equals

the # of unknowns - # of equations.
