We can't use these exact values to divide up the apples because we probably don't want to have portions of apples, so we have to scale up.
Let's find a common denominator for these three fractions. 4, 3, and 5 are all factors of 60. That's the lowest common denominator. But, in this case, let's use 120 instead. You'll see why in a moment.
1/4 = 30/120
2/3 = 80/120
3/5 = 72/120
Therefore we could say that the whole-number ratio is 30:80:72
This tells us that we have to split the 182 apples up into 30 + 80 + 72 = 182 parts. Hey! The answer jumped out and surprised us. The three people will get 30, 80, and 72 apples, respectively.
