The vagus nerve (cranial nerve X) supplies parasympathetic innervation to the foregut and midgut. The foregut includes the esophagus, stomach, and the proximal duodenum. The midgut includes the distal duodenum, all of the small intestine, the ascending colon, and the proximal half of the transverse colon.
The hindgut is comprised of distal half of the transverse colon, descending colon, sigmoid colon, rectum, and the anal canal proximal to the pectinate line. The hindgut receives parasympathetic innervation via the pelvic splanchnic nerves.
