Functionalism is the theory that all aspects of a society exist for an explicit purpose that is crucial to the survival of the society. ("everything must exist for a reason"). When thinking about a social phenomenon, a functionalist will always ask "what purpose is this serving? what is this doing for society?"
I hope this helps!
