Why is there debate about thymus being an endocrine gland?
I read on my textbook that there is debate about whether thymus is an endocrine gland. But they do have glandular cells no? Is producing T Cells the only point for thinking it not as a part of endocrine system?
So, Q: What's the reason behind this debate and has it reached any conclusion?
Thymus produce several hormones or hormone like structures necessary for T-cell development. Main hormone - thymosin. Hormone secretion of thymus plays role in proper functioning of immune system only with no effect on other organs or systems. However immune system has influence basically on every cell of our body we can state that hormones of the thymus indirectly regulates process in organs and system.
