I am going to assume from Latisha's description that the flower garden is shaped like a rectangle.
If the length is 3 times the width then I can model that as L = 3W. Area of a rectangle is L*W = 48.
If I substitute 3W for L then 3W * W = 48 ----> 3W2 = 48 ----> W2 = 16 -----> W = 4 m
Thus L = 3W = 3(4) = 12 m
