Your goal is to get the x by itself.
y = 2x - 5
First, you want to get rid of the -5. In order to move a number or a variable, you have to do the opposite of the way it is connected to the x. The 5 is being subtracted, so you add 5 to both sides. That makes the 5 cancel out on the right of the equal mark.
y + 5 = 2x
Now you have a 2 connected to the x. When a number and a variable are right next to each other like that, they are being multiplied. So, to get rid of the 2, we divide both sides by 2. The 2 cancels out on the right.
y + 5 = x
