Let X = the number of bike riders and (X+178) = the number of hikers. Our equation is
X + (X+178) = 676
OR
2X +178 = 676
Isolate X by first subtracting 178 from both sides of the equation. The result is
2X=498
Next solve for X by dividing both sides by 2. The result is
X = 249
Plugging in 249 inti the original equation, there were 249 bikers, and 427 hikers.
