First lets look at the equations the sum of two numbers is -11 and one number is 161 less than the other.
x + y = -11
Let y = x - 161
So we can substitute x - 161 for y
x + x - 161 = -11
Combine like terms
2x = -11 + 161
2x = 150
Divide both sides by 2
x = 75
y = x - 161 = 75 - 161 = -86
Checking
75 + (-86) = -11
Since we know x is 75, one can also check this with the original single equation as follows:
x + y = -11
y = -11 - x
y = -11 - 75 = -86
and again
75 + (-86) = - 11
