Perimeter is all the sides added l+l+w+w=2l+2w

16=2w+2l

the length is 3 less than the width can be written as

l=w-3

We substitute l=w-3 into the Perimeter equation

16=2w+2l

16=2w+2(w-3)

Distribute

16=2w+2w-6

Combine like terms

16=4w-6

Add 6 to both sides

22=4w

Divide by 4

w=5.5 cm

l=w-3=5.5-3=2.5 cm

Area is length x width

(5.5cm)(2.5cm)=13.75 cm²
