The equation A=25w gives the area A (in square feet) of a rectangular dance floor with a width of w feet.
When equations represent functions [ that is, y = f(x) ], x is the independent variable and y is the dependent variable. The value of y depends on the value of variable x.
Here, A=25x is written such that the value of the Area A depends on the value of variable x. So, x is the independent variable and A is the dependent variable.The equation A=25w gives the area.
Note that w=A/25 is a function for which A is the independent variable and w is the dependent variable. So, given the area A, you can compute the width a floor that has length=25.
