Is www an abbreviation?

The initialism ["www" means "world wide web"][mw]. The common definition of an initialism is that it is an abbreviation, formed by using the first letter of each word. According to most definitions, an abbreviation is a shorter from of the abbreviated term. But in speech, "www" (nine syllables) takes longer to say than "world wide web" (three syllables). **Can "www" still be considered an abbreviation _in speech_?** [mw]: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/www [wiki]: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abbreviation
