Why did you get into film photography?

I started shooting on film because I needed a new perspective. I got into photography just as digital cameras were beginning to enter the photography scene, and never had to shoot film, but in the past year or so I began feeling very uninspired. I felt like my photos didn't have any soul to them--sure they were "good" photographs but they didn't evoke any emotional responses. They also lacked that grittiness of film that I really love; the light leaks, the blur, the noise; the character. Film was a way to express my art in messier way, like using charcoal instead of pencil.

The reason I got into film photography is because digital cameras weren’t even a dream on somebody’s design board. I started in 1984 using color and black-and-white film, and when I went to school in 1988 black and white film was what a majority of the classes were shot in. This was using both 35mm and 4”x5” large format. I still own a couple of my Canon F1N cameras and a half dozen lenses. For the most part, film kept & keeps photographers honest. (unless of course, they’re scanned into a computer and changed in Photoshop) While digital cameras have opened up the creative possibilities for photographers, it’s also made us lazy.11/17/19
