How advanced is our understanding of the biochemistry and neuroanatomy of the brainstem?

This is relative. Relative to 20 years ago, our understanding is advanced. However, relative to how much we need to know to cure diseases, not enough. Truthfully, we don't even know what we don't know about the brainstem.
