You and your friend caught 36 sunfish in Lake Okeechobee. The number y of sunfish caught by your friend is 8 more than the number x of sunfish caught by you.

 

Write a system of linear equations and solve the system of linear equations.

Answer 1

x = number of fish you caught

y = number of fish your friend caught

 

x + y = 36

 

Your friend caught 8 more fish that you did.

 

y = x +8

 

Using substitution,

 

x + ( x + 8 ) = 36

2x + 8 = 36

2x = 28

x= 14

 

You caught 14 fish, your friend caught 22 fish.
