Hi. You can use the Photoshop burn tool to slightly darken the background. Or use the dodge tool to lighten the subject.
My first choice, however, would be to use a shallow depth of field (small Fstop) when actually taking the image. This means your subject will be sharp whilee the background is not so in focus.

The best and easiest way to have people "stand out" is do it when taking a the picture, Use a large aperture which will blur the background behind your subject. This will allow them to stand out. If you're shooting a close up portrait try to alter the normal Rembrandt lighting look by moving off camera flash more to the side. Have fun experimenting.09/05/20
