Hey there!
Test prep is super important. The great thing, though, is that with the right effort you can dramatically improve your score. I personally know a student who brought their score from a 16 to a 32. (Yes, they doubled it. And you can too!)
If you're willing to pay for a subscription, I highly recommend using the ACT online prep website. It's hosted specifically by the official ACT, and it provides you with a structured learning plan to target your weak areas.
Also, as you continue practicing, you'll begin to recognize patterns in the questions. Generally speaking, the ACT utilizes the same format for almost every test. They ask questions that rely on the same skillset, so my learning what you need to work on you can build a really strong foundation.
The other thing, PRACTICE! There are plenty of practice tests and questions online. Every student is speaking, but in general, students improve with every practice test they take. Another thing I recommend is forcing yourself to take at least one practice test before your test date in realistic conditions. Provide yourself with a time limit and zero distractions, and try to complete a test cover to cover. This will help you become comfortable with the test-taking environment.
Tutors are also a great resource, and if you have any further questions or need help structuring a learning plan I would be happy to assist.
Best of luck!

ACT Reading Pro: 17 Yrs Experience + Psychology of Test Success
Here are the best strategies to help you prep effectively:
1. Master the Test Patterns
The ACT is highly predictable. It uses the same format and tests the same skill sets year after year.
- Identify Weaknesses: Use a diagnostic test to see which sections (English, Math, Reading, or Science) need the most work.
- Recognize Question Types: As you practice, you’ll notice the same types of grammar rules or math formulas appearing. Once you recognize the pattern, the "trick" disappears.
2. Use Official Resources
While there are many third-party books, staying close to the source is usually best.
- Official ACT Online Prep: This is highly recommended as it provides a structured learning plan specifically tailored to your performance.
- Real Practice Tests: Use official practice questions to get a feel for the actual wording and difficulty level of the exam.
3. Simulate Testing Conditions
Knowledge is only half the battle; endurance is the other half.
- The "Full Dress Rehearsal": Take at least one full-length practice test from cover to cover.
- Time Management: Use a strict timer and eliminate all distractions (no phone, no music). This builds the mental stamina required for the actual 3-hour exam.
4. Comparison of ACT Sections
| Section | Focus Area | Quick Strategy |
| English | Grammar & Usage | Learn the "conciseness" rule; usually, the shortest grammatically correct answer is right. |
| Math | Algebra & Geometry | Memorize common formulas; the ACT does not provide a formula sheet. |
| Reading | Comprehension | Don't over-analyze; the answer must be directly supported by the text. |
| Science | Data Interpretation | Focus on the graphs and tables first; only read the text if the question requires it. |
