Because no one should have to say, "I was never any good at math."
The holes in a number count as one point each. Then you multiply how many scorable unique numbers have holes in them by the number of holes.
9999 =4
Each 9 has one hole, so they are worth at total of 4 points
There is only one unique number that scores points, so we multiply that by 1 ... 1(4) = 4
8888=8
Each 8 has two holes, so each 8 counts as two points, so we find their sum. 2+2+2+2=8
There is only one unique number that scores points, so we multiply that by 1 ... 1(8) = 4
1816=6
The 8 has two holes (2 points) and the 6 has one hole (1 point). Add those together (2+1=3). There are two unique numbers that score points, so multiply the sum by 2... (2+1)x3 = 6
1212=0
None of the numbers have holes in them!
