The epiglottis is the "gatekeeper " . It closes during eating and opens during breathing. It is described as a "leaf like" structure. If the epiglottis is inflamed (epiglottitis) or malfunctioning this can be life threatening because food and liquid can then enter the respiratory tract. When food/drinks enters the respiratory tract this is called aspiration pneumonia.
