x + (x+1) + (x +3.70) = 15.20
3x + 4.70=15.20
3x = 10.50
x = 3.5

Let f = money given to the first person, s = money given to the second person, and t = money given to the third person; then:
s = f + 1
t = s + 2.70
Then, use substitution to put both in terms of f:
t = s + 2.70 = (f + 1) + 2.70 = f + 3.70
Write an equation showing that all three should have a total of $15.20, and substitute s and t for the expressions in terms of f:
f + s + t = 15.20
⇒ f + f + 1 + f + 3.70 = 3f + 4.70 = 15.20
⇒ 3f = 10.50
⇒ f = 3.50
So, the first person has $3.50. The second person has a dollar more, which is $4.50. The third person has $2.70 more than the second, which is $7.20. To sum up:
f = $3.50
s = $4.50
t = $7.20
f
f + 1
f + 1 + 2.7
3f + 4.7 = 15.2
3f = 10.5
f = 3.5
$3.50, $4.50 and $7.20
