If 85% of the lemonade had been consumed, then what remains is 15%, because 100%-85%=15%.

The question said only 3 cups remained, so 3 is equal to this remaining 15%.

 

X(15%)=3

X(0.15)=3

divide 3 by 0.15 and you get X=20

 

So we figured out Jane started with 20 cups of lemonade.
