Let the first number be "x". Since the second number is five times the first number, let the second number be "5x". A sum is the answer to an addition problem, so you set it up like this:
x + 5x = 72
combine like terms
6x = 72
divide both sides by 6
x = 12 --> this is the first number
5x = 60 --> this is the second number
