Google Translate dice che "to try" è "provare", ma credo che questo è "to try" come "I'd like to try the gelato". Vorrei capire come si dice "to try" come "I tried to hit the ball" o qualcosa simile. Sto leggendo un po', e in un libro, dice "Lui cercò di carpirgli la lettera." Sembra che questo uso sia il modo che sto cercando, ma non so.

provare and cercare in this contest is basically synonyms except for a slight difference but will place them in this way:provare( neutral, like you're just trying), cercare( trying but aiming at figuring out the issue)

For example:

provo a farlo (I will try to do it);

Cerco di farlo (I will try to do it. you're more in it when you use cercare)

Note that in other contest, cercare can mean _to look for or search

example. Sto cercando la chiave della macchina (I'm looking for the car keys)

Very good! There is a difference and you noticed. "To try" in "To try to hit the ball" is "cercare" there is a slight difference. You could also say: Provare a colpire la palla but it is like you will try once just for the fun of it.

Cercare has more of an intent. You are trying because you want to learn and succeed: Cercare di colpire la palla > To try to hit the ball. I hope that explains it a bit.
